Atlantic Canada Marine Biodiversity Essay 2012

The book seeks to encapsulatesome of the major novelties of this fascinating new discipline and its contribution to the management, conservation and restoration of marine and coastal ecosystems as well as the cultural heritages of coastal communities in different parts of the world.Mussels often act as ecosystem engineers in rocky intertidal habitats, favoring the occurrence of many small invertebrates by increasing habitat complexity and improving local environmental conditions. We identified all invertebrates and measured their abundance in replicate quadrats that were fully covered by mussels.

Thus, there is an urgent need to determine which marine species will adapt and which will go extinct.

Here, we review the growing literature on marine extinctions and extinction risk in the fossil, historical, and modern records to compare the patterns, drivers, and biological correlates of marine extinctions at different times in the past.

Although seagrass communities have been well-studied in the field, a quantification of their food-web structure and functioning, and how these change across space and human impacts has been lacking.
